1999's SONS OF THE GOLDEN WEST works on a similar principle to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's justifiably legendary WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN: This lineup of the Burritos, featuring hit Nashville songwriter John Beland on lead vocals, joined with a number of country music legends to record an album of standards and originals as a celebration of the common bonds of country music. The other comparison is to Carlos Santana's SUPERNATURAL, released the same year on the same label: get a bunch of big name guests and maybe radio will notice. The guests are indeed an impressive lot, including Merle Haggard, Ricky Skaggs, The Oak Ridge Boys, bluegrass fiddler Sam Bush, Alison Krauss and Delbert McClinton, all of whom perform admirably. The songs, mostly by Beland, who also produces, are a slickly commercial but not heartless lot, and the whole thing is much more agreeable than you might think.

Dirty Linen (10-11/99, p.69) - "...Purists might argue as to the validity of this lineup, but they sound very much like a band carrying on with the Burritos tradition....thoroughly enjoyable..."
