Of course, the model of your bicycle is going to determine the type of chain that you must buy. For instance, your BMX bike is going to require the right BMX bike chain so that you can ensure a proper fit. An improper fit can cause the chain to slip and this can be dangerous.
There are a number of brands that you can invest in. For instance, you have those made by Shimano, Shimano's bike chains, which are a high quality budget chain. If you are looking for something on the high dollar side, Shimano offers those as well, especially in stainless steel. The stainless steel bicycle chain sometimes has a higher price range.
If you need a color that matches your bicycle, then you may be able to find the color you need from KMC. But make sure that what you are choosing will fit the bike. A chain too short won't fit and one that is too long will slip off.
And in identifying your chain, simply measure it. You also want to ensure you abide by what the speed is. For instance, you will want a 10 speed bicycle chain if you are working with a 10 speed bicycle.
