The Qur'an is the central text of the Islamic faith. The word Qur'an comes from the Arabic verb meaning to 'read,' and, traditionally, it is recited aloud. According to Muslim tradition the Qur'an is the actual word of God as revealed to the prophet Muhammad in the Arabic language through the intermediary of the archangel Gabriel. Of all the magnificent Qur'ans in the British Library's collection of Arabic manuscripts, the Royal Mamluk Baybars' Qur'an can justifiably claim to be a world treasure. It is recognised as a masterpiece of its time and has arguably never been equalled. It was produced in Cairo, on paper, in seven volumes during the years 1304-06 and is called after the Mamluk ruler Baybars II, who commissioned it. The calligraphic script is written entirely in gold, and it is sumptuously illuminated with gold filigree work in the Mamluk style, characterised by the extensive use of geometric patterns.
This CD-ROM follows the success of the earlier Lindisfarne Gospels and Sherborne Missal titles, each using the Turning the PagesÄ technology. A total of 30 pages of this manuscript have been digitised and the user 'clicks and drags' the mouse to turn the pages of the manuscript in real time. Text about each page is included alongside the manuscript, and the CD-ROM includes an extensive essay by Colin Baker. The text is available as large print and as audio, and there are print and zoom facilities.
