Not everything on this 11-disc Time-Life box set qualifies as sweet soul. There? s some hard-edged soul, disco, and a little funk. Nevertheless, it? s a good resource for anyone who needs to plunge into popular rhythm & blues from the ? 70s. Artists like the Spinners, the Commodores, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, and Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes appear several times, and Tavares appear more often than Stevie Wonder, but there? s still a wide scope of contributors: most of the era? s big names, in fact. There? s no apparent emphasis on any part of the decade; the early, middle, and late years are well represented. A significant chunk of the selections is essential, including Earth, Wind & Fire's ?
