Album Notes
Details
Miscellaneous Original score composed by Johnny Pate.
Includes liner notes by A. Scott Galloway and Johnny Pate.
This 1971 release on the classic Stax label is one of the best-known (and most coveted) soundtrack albums in existence. A favorite amongst DJs and collectors of Blaxploitation memorabilia, SHAFT earned producer/arranger/composer Isaac Hayes an Academy Award for "Best Song" for "Theme from Shaft." The record earned a No. 1 position on the pop charts and spawned countless imitators and followers who continue trying to replicate Hayes' studied cool to this day.
But times are different now, and the soundtrack to Gordon Parks' film will remain a sonic time capsule to the laid-back, mack-daddy, post-hippie New York City that has come and gone. The sound of an era is preserved in Gary Jones' bongo and conga beats and the Memphis Horns' sultry blares. "Bumpy's Lament" and "Bumpy's Blues" capture the essence of the funky gangster, while "Theme from Shaft" has become a standard of the funk/soul genre.

Reviews Mojo (Publisher) (11/99, p.132) - "...boasting Issac Hayes' brilliant score. The main theme proved unstoppable, an award-winner that resulted in countless similar funk fiestas..."
