Album Notes
Details
Miscellaneous Recorded between 1969 and 1983. Includes liner notes by Rick Clark.
In the late 1960s and early '70s, legions of aspiring acoustic guitar stylists did permanent damage to their fingers in a futile attempt to emulate the knuckle-busting guitar wizardry of Leo Kottke. ANTHOLOGY is a generous two-disc compilation capturing the six-string hero in his prime. Over the course of ANTHOLOGY, we can hear Kottke progress from solo guitar pieces to full-band settings, sometimes even lending his quirky vocal style to the proceedings. Whatever the format, though, the level of invention remains consistent as Kottke processes disparate strains of jazz, country, folk, blues, and world music into his own immediately recognizable sound.
Along with such peers as John Fahey and Robbie Basho, Kottke was at the vanguard of acoustic-guitar instrumental techniques in his heyday, and these are some of the tunes that define his legacy. Death-defying fingerpicking patterns, wild slide leaps, unusual and atmosphere-heavy voicings, and a taste for sophisticated left-of-center harmonies are the weapons Kottke employed to help redefine the language of acoustic guitar, and his work is heard in all its glory throughout ANTHOLOGY's two discs.

Reviews Entertainment Weekly (5/9/97, p.81) - "...a great overview of the first two decades of the recording career of a dazzling instrumentalist with a you-grow-to-love-it voice whose commitment to his craft jump-started a reappreciation of American acoustic music." - Rating: A
