Thyroid Eye Disease : Diagnosis and Treatment

Forty-four contributions, solicited by Dutton (ophthalmology, U. of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) and Haik (ophthalmology, U. of Tennessee Health Science Center), are presented as an update on the current understanding of Graves' disease. General aspects of the thyroid gland, its anatomy and physiology, and clinical evaluation are discussed. The immune system, the nature of autoimmune disease, self- tolerance, and the role of inflammatory molecules are examined. Factors in systemic Graves' disease are explored. Graves' eye disease is reviewed, with explorations of the immunological mechanisms in eye changes, the role of the orbital fibroblast, associated muscle autoantibodies, changes in glycosaminoglycan synthesis, histological changes, clinical manifestations and diagnostic techniques.
