"What Did Ezekiel See?"

Christman (theology and Catholic studies, Loyola College, Maryland) examines how Christians during the first six centuries interpreted Ezekiel 1 as they sought to discern its theological message. Her focus is on how theological exposition of the passage evolved, and what this reveals about the exegetical habits of early Christians. She finds three dominant exegetical themes. The first emphasizes the inherently christocentric character of the prophet's vision, and concludes thereby that the Old and New Testaments form a unified book so Old Testament texts can only be discerned when read in the light of Christ. The second looks at what the passage reveals about human knowledge of God. The third finds that the vision illumines the moral life, the way of virtue.
