Published in tandem with the "When You Think About Art" exhibition (Aug 12-22, 2008), this volume examines changing ideas about art. The exhibition featured archival images from the George Paton Gallery Archive at the University of Melbourne. Curator Vivian explains that the title of the exhibition and book is taken from the first of the Ewing Gallery's Ideas Shows in 1974, which asked artists and others: "When you think about art, what do you think?" Responses included a printout of an artist's brainwaves as he meditated on this question. The same question was recently posed to artists and writers involved with the gallery over the years.
