About Almay

Combining the names of the founders, Alfred and Fanny May, Almay was established in 1931 and began to manufacture cosmetics for women. It began in 1930, when cosmetics were heavy and thick, made with strong pigments and irritating chemicals. These cosmetics were too harsh for Fanny May, so she asked her husband Alfred, a professional chemist, to experiment with her makeup to see if he could determine which ingredients irritated her skin. With the help of dermatologist Dr. Marion Sulzberger, they devised a formula using hypoallergenic ingredients for cosmetics that were pure and gentle enough for her to use every day. Almay foundations, Almay concealers and Almay face powders are the start of a beauty regimen for even the most delicate skin types.

All Almay face products are hypoallergenic, fragrance-free and non-irritating. They are formulated to avoid clogging pores and discourage breakouts. A more recent development in the product line, Almay Pure Blends products are more than 95% natural and do not use silicone, mineral oil or other petroleum-derived ingredients or other chemical additives. The fruit and flower extracts used in Almay Pure Blends products provide antioxidant and skin-conditioning benefits, and they include extracts of lotus, acai, papaya, viola tricolor, orchid and Japanese orange peel. The line includes Almay Pure Blends lipgloss, Almay Pure Blends eye shadow and eyeliners, and Almay Pure Blends mascaras.
