About Avia

Starting in 1979, Jerry Stubblefield and his son Don Stubblefield, an engineering graduate from Stanford, developed shoe designs that revolutionized athletic footwear. Even the name suggests the design concept, with the Latin word Aria (which means “to fly”), prompting some of the most creative concepts in the Avia athletics shoes which followed, including the development of the cantilever sole, a cushioning system which adjusts to pressure to provide better stability, shock absorption, and actual energy return. Purchased by Reebok in 1987, Avia became a part of the American Sporting Goods Corporation in 1996.

Avia running and track shoes led the way with this cushioning cantilever design, following up with Avia cross training shoes and Avia aerobics shoes which add Anatomical Rebound Technology for an ultra lightweight bottom and a sleek, supportive mid-foot shank. A responsive, resilient plate under the heel absorbs shock, a perfect choice for aerobic activities and for the flexibility required from a cross-training shoe. Another revolutionary compound, Stryk-FÕM is often found in the heel or forefoot of even the simplest Avia walking shoes and Avia sneakers for dense cushioning designed to mimic the way a body naturally absorbs shock and impact.
