About Capel Rugs

A. Leon Capel founded Capel Rugs in 1917 in Troy, North Carolina, becoming America's oldest and largest manufacturer and importer of area Capel Rugs rugs. Using the raw material from his Gee-Haw Plowline company, Capel fashioned braids and sewed them into spirals to make Capel Rugs reversible braided rugs. Quality and durability was key to Capel's business. In 1936, Capel purchased the first of two spinning mills to meet the growing manufacturing needs by providing a steady flow of high quality yarns for the braids. To this day, Capel still does its own dyeing, spinning, braiding and sewing in its North Carolina factories. Railroad boxcars full of braids made a monthly trip to Sears, Roebuck and Company in California in the 1950s.

After attending college in 1957, Jess S. Capel joined his father in the rug business, with A. Leon Capel Jr. and Arron W.E. Capel following soon behind. Affectionately called “G2”, the brothers spent the next 50 years building partnerships as well as expanding manufacturing, products and sales. The third generation or G3s, entered the picture in the 1980s, playing leading roles in manufacturing, retail, licensing, human resources and national sales.

Capel expanded his business by importing collections from Japan and Finland starting in 1963. He later purchased high quality hand tufted and hand knotted rugs from India and China and then purchased a larger manufacturing facility in Dalton, Georgia, in 2003, where it produces Capel Rugs indoor rugs and {Capel Rugs outdoor rugs">Capel Rugs outdoor rugs.
