| The rugged Chippewa line of footwear was founded in 1901, named for the Indian tribe of the region. The company set out from day one to design and manufacture the best Chippewa shoes for the outdoorsman in the United States. They began as a company that made the highest quality logging boot for the local pulp and paper industry workers. Timber was big business at the turn of the century, the thirst for wood and pulp pushed workers further into the forests of the upper Midwest and untamed Canada. The risky job of lumberjacks called for an extraordinary footwear company, Chippewa presented its Chippewa Logger Boot to thousands of skilled men with dangerous jobs. The industrial quality of Chippewa's shoes included a steel safety toe. They are built specifically for the individual who wants a rugged, tough, durable steel safety boot that will take the punishment while providing long-lasting comfort and protection. The front lace system used on Chippewa Boots EPS (Emergency Protective Services) style was first used on their 1959 flight boots. Those were approved and used by the Strategic Air Command and by Convair test pilots. The patented Kush-N-Kollar feature on padded collars is a Chippewa innovation, so unique that a patent was applied for and awarded by the U.S. Patent Office.
