| Donna Karan began as the designer for Anne Klein upon the founder's passing in 1974, but she had developed her own style alongside the brand, and the first Donna Karan New York collection was launched in 1985. Donna explains the DKNY brand, officially founded in 1989, as a matter of carefully balancing priorities, just as every woman must do: Design is a constant challenge to balance comfort with luxe, the practical with the desirable. Her entire design concept is based on starting with seven easy pieces, separates that can go from work to after-hours to weekends, and seamlessly from one season to the next. After eight years of creating only women's apparel, Karan considered the men in her life beginning with her husband, and she created a menswear collection called DKNY Men in 1992. This new label included tailored DKNY suits, dress wear, formalwear, casual wear like DKNY casual pants and DKNY cargo shorts, sportswear, and shoes. The DKNY beauty collection was also created in 1992, adding DKNY eau de parfums to the label. The company was purchased in 2001 by Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessey. Products range from DKNY and DKNY Jeans for women, accessories such as DKNY wallets, DKNY handbags and totes, undergarments like DKNY push-up bras, DKNY chemise, teddy and babydoll sets and DKNY leggings, a huge line of both dress and casual shoes like DKNY sneakers, DKNY wedges, DKNY flats and DKNY pumps, baby clothing, and DKNY menswear. The men's collection was available until 2007, when it was reduced to the DKNY Jeans label, men's underwear, eyewear and DKNY watches.
