| EMU started in Geelong, Australia in 1994 as a shoe company that bases its collections on the most innovative wool technologies. The region is known for its wool, cattle and grain and the area sits along some of the best beaches in the world. A group of Australian surfers invented the original sheepskin boot so that they could keep their feet warm and dry after surfing in cold, winter water. The EMU company was founded by employees of a tannery in the area who had the knowledge of all the processes from raw material sourcing to footwear production. The combination of surf and sheep are the foundation of the EMU footwear company. The Emu is Australia's national bird and it is known to be resourceful, fast and can live with little food and water in the outback areas. The company chose Emu as the brand name to reflect their values of being resourceful and fast, always moving forward. EMU manufactures, designs and distributes footwear for men, women, and children as well as women's apparel and accessories and prides itself on the fact that their products are Australian born, Australian based and Australian owned.
