| Started in 1972 by Stephen Marks, French Connection makes innovative, fashionable clothing for men and women around the world. French Connection has two brands, FCUK and Nicole Farhi, and has over 100 stores in the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. Stephen Marks grew up in northern London, playing tennis and working at his father's hairdresser shop. By age 18, he had won the junior's title at Wimbledon in 1964. Marks was looking for a way to earn a good living so he went to work for a clothing manufacturer where he learned many skills. By the end of the 1960s, Marks left the manufacturer to work for clothing designer Louis Feraud and soon became director of the company, but only for a short while. Soon thereafter, Marks established Stephen Marks London Ltd. with very little money. He had an eye for youthful fashion and started with designing suits and coats. After a visit to Hong Kong and a realization that clothing can be manufactured cheaply but with quality, French Connection was born. A freelance designer, Nicole Farhi, joined Marks and became the company's chief designer. She handled the youth-oriented designs for the French Connection label and began to produce designs under her own name for an older, more mature women's market. Stores started top pop up throughout London and the rest of the U.K. In 1984, French Connection was introduced to the U.S market. With a playful advertising and marketing campaign starting in the mid-1990s, French Connection took off and quickly added new stores globally. French Connection makes coats, jackets, dresses, tops, tees, sweaters, jumpsuits, jeans, pants, skirts, shoes, leggings and accessories for men and women. They continue to produce unique and eye-catching ad campaigns that are successful all over the world.
