| Doris and Don Fisher opened the first Gap store in San Francisco in 1969 as a way to provide people with, quite simply, a pair of pants that properly fit. Originally envisioned as a modest chain of casual wear stores, their passion for providing real choice to their consumers drove the company to grow. In 1972, the original Gap label appeared, and this original private label approach would be copied by many retailers in the future. Leading the way with the flagship Gap jeans, other clothing styles soon followed, including Gap trousers, Gap corduroy pants, Gap t-shirts, and Gap oxford shirts, extending the commitment to the perfect fit through a wider variety of casual styles. By 1983, Gap had become a major player in fashion retail, pulling Banana Republic under its wings, creating Old Navy from scratch in 2000, then developing Piperlime in 2006, their first online-only brand. As the styles continued to expand, adding sleepwear and delicates like Gap pajama sets, camisoles, body suits, Gap sleep shorts and boxers, and even Gap leotards, tights and leggings to a somewhat risky selection that included less casual choices like Gap dresses and specialized styles such as Gap Western wear, the brand and its stores expanded as well, with continued success thanks to wise pricing strategies and consistent quality.
