| Established in 1837, this French fashion house was originally a harness workshop owned by Thierry Hermès. Successful in its own right, eventually his son Charles-Émile took over the business and introduced saddlery to the brand. Over time, his sons developed a line of clothing, beginning in 1918 with a leather Hermes jacket for golf. Leather Hermes handbags followed soon after, still one of the top products created by the company. In the 1930s, the company began turning to other materials, using raw Chinese silk for a luxurious collection of Hermes scarves, which has since broadened into a line including stoles, shawls and other ladies' accessories. Demonstrating a tradition of refined elegance, the company diversified still further, and marked over 100 years of success with the debut of jewelry, fragrances and silk ties. The 1970s through 1980s saw a surge in the company's worldwide popularity as new stores opened in Japan, the United States and all over Europe. The company's ready-to-wear collection, like previous lines, used only natural materials for its products, unlike other companies which turned to man-made materials. Examples include Hermes flats made from suede goatskin leather, calfskin boots and a variety of pumps, as well as belts made from chain, crocodile and kidskin. Porcelain teapots, cups and other tableware also debuted in the 1980s, which worked well for the company over the next decade or so. The company remained in six generations of family before Patrick Thomas became the president in 2010, who had been a part of the company family since 1989. With such a wide variety of goods, this lifestyle brand focuses on a refined style and sense of understated elegance.
