J.A. Henckels International, established in 1895, represents the best in German steel design for kitchen utensils and cutlery. J.A. Henckels cutlery sets, J.A. Henckels shears and J.A. Henckels flatware are designed for the value conscious customer who wants a quality product for their everyday needs. Based in Solingen, Germany, this company began with a knife design back in 1731, the ""Twin"", which was created by Peter Henckels. Forty years later, his son Johann Abraham Henckels was born, who opened the first Henkels trading outlet in Berlin in 1818, following up with a store in New York in 1883. He eventually renamed the company to Zwilling J.A. Henkels, creating the distinctive red Henckels logo in 1969. J.A. Henckels carving sets, as well as J.A. Henckels specialty knives and all of their cutlery, is manufactured in several different ways, often using an ice hardening process for sharpness and stain resistance. Many styles are forged from a single piece of high carbon stainless steel, and most blades are hand-honed to create a lasting edge with the precision of expert human craftsmanship. J.A. Henckels sharpening tools were added to the product line in 2001, followed by a wide range of kitchen gadgets like J.A. Henckels peelers, J.A. Henckels slicers and J.A. Henckels cheese knives.
