| In 1916, Keds created the first shoe with a soft rubber sole, so comfortable and quiet you could "sneak" up on your boyfriend. This original Keds sneaker has remained a popular style for over ninety years. Worn by Kate and Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe and Jackie Onassis, and repeatedly featured by Vogue, Elle and Women's Wear Daily, Keds continues to attract fashion designers and stylists with their classic, authentic look. Evolved from the merging of several rubber manufacturing companies including Goodyear and US Rubber in the late 1800s, they consolidated all of the various shoe brands they produced into one label - Keds. In 1938, the Kedettes were introduced, the very first high-heeled shoes with a shock-absorbing rubber sole, which may have led to the development of today's current styles of Keds walking shoes. By 1949, the brand had developed a new line called PRO-Keds for athletes and sportswear, leading to two distinct approaches to Keds athletic shoes. Keds tennis shoes, which resemble the original sneaker but offer more bounce, are made with the same, incredibly durable vulcanized rubber process, which fuses the upper part of the shoe into the sole while the rubber is still in liquid form. When Stride Rite purchased Keds in 1979, Keds slip-on shoes, Keds flat shoes and their iconic sneakers saw a huge increase in popularity throughout the 1980s. In the meantime, Sugar Ray Leonard became the official spokesperson for PRO-Keds in 1981. A quick sprint forward to 2008 marks the debut of Keds Studio, which gives every customer the chance to design their own one-of-a-kind pair of Keds.
