| Mattel was launched out of a garage workshop in Southern California in 1945 by Ruth and Elliot Handler. Originally in the picture frame business, Matt started a side business creating dollhouse furniture out of the picture frame scraps. The company was incorporated in Hawthorne, California, in 1948. Mattel advertised its toys on the Mickey Mouse Club show in 1955, revolutionizing the way toys were marketed at that time. In 1959, Mattel introduced the Mattel Barbie doll, leading Mattel to the top of the toy industry. The famous See 'N Say talking toy launched Mattel into the educational preschool market in 1965. By 1968, Mattel was rolling out its die cast vehicles, the Mattel Hot Wheels. In 1977, the company entered the electronic game market. Re-entering into a relationship with Disney in 1988, Mattel introduced a new line of infant and preschool toys based on famous Disney characters. Throughout the years, Mattel has provided toys for children of all ages that stimulate their creativity, add to their education and kindle their imaginations. Mattel has partnered with such companies as Vivendi Universal Publishing, Ferrari Toy Company, Tyco, Nickelodeon and Fisher-Price. As a result, Mattel has always been on the cutting edge of the toy business, bringing such memorable toys as Tickle Me Elmo and the Cabbage Patch Kids .
