| Paul Mitchell was a famous hairdresser and co-founder of the hair care product company, John Paul Mitchell Systems. He enrolled in beauty school when he was sixteen, and after his five-year apprenticeship, he began working at various hair salons, winning many hairstyling competitions and eventually joining Vidal Sassoon in 1960, quickly becoming one of the best-known stylists in London. Paul moved to New York in 1965 and opened salons for Vidal Sassoon, then met John Paul DeJoria in 1971, who worked for Redken at the time. Between the two, Paul's styling expertise and John's deep understanding of product development and marketing led to a natural friendship, and eventually to much more. In 1980, Paul and John founded John Paul Mitchell Systems to market professional hair care products through salons. Although the company began with Paul Mitchell shampoos and conditioners, the first Paul Mitchell styling product to earn the appreciation of professional hair stylists was called Paul Mitchell Hair Sculpting Lotion, created with panthenol, a derivative of Vitamin B5, as well as conditioners to balance the effect of the styling elements, promoting healthier hair. Paul Mitchel Color Protect line offers UV protection and long-lasting color protection without sulfates. For decades Paul Mitchell products were only made for and distributed to professional salons, so customers had to request Paul Mitchell conditioners and other hair care and styling products from their hairdressers if they wanted the luxurious results.
