| Polo Ralph Lauren, American fashion designer Ralph Lauren's luxury lifestyle company, specializes in high-end casual to semi-formal wear for men and women, as well as accessories, fragrance, home (bedding, towels) and housewares. It all began in 1967, as Ralph Lauren established the Polo label with an unusual line of ties. Rather than creating yet another label offering the narrow ties popular at the time, Lauren designed wide, handmade ties using unexpected, flamboyant materials. Within a year, Mr. Lauren moved to broaden his menswear line, offering a designer boutique within Bloomingdale's, the first time that a shop-within-a-shop was used in retail. The first women's apparel line was introduced in 1971, and at the same time, the world saw the iconic polo player on women's shirt cuffs, though he quickly migrated across every Ralph Lauren collection. By 1972, accessories and footwear had joined the label, beginning with casual dress styles like Polo Ralph Lauren loafers for men and Polo Ralph Lauren Mary Janes for women. He reached out to Western style influences in 1978, adding Polo Ralph Lauren boots, rancher's jackets, prairie skirts and several other country-inspired styles. Lauren went even deeper into the Southwest by 1981 with his Santa Fe collection, debuting Polo Ralph Lauren sandals, concho belts, patterned sweaters and more. Always watching as the world moved, designing for refined tastes in even the most casual styles, the Polo Sport line launched for men in 1993, then for women in 1996, featuring Polo Ralph Lauren polo shirts and Polo Ralph Lauren sneakers, becoming the official outfitter of the America's Cup United States team.
