| Founded in 1824, Reed & Barton enjoys a reputation as one of the United States' foremost silversmiths with fine tableware and gifts. The company is based in Taunton, Massachusetts, in what was an unsuccessful pewter factory. Henry G. Reed and Charles E. Barton took over the pewter works and added silver processing to the facility, and they began by making weapons for Union Army soldiers and officers during the Civil War. In 1889, the company began production of the products for which they are best known today - sterling silver Reed & Barton flatware. As the United States entered World War II, Reed & Barton turned to stainless steel like the Reed & Barton stainless steel flatware and holloware (which refers to Reed & Barton serving bowls and platters as well as coffee and tea serveware and bakeware) for the armed forces for its rust-resistant properties, also creating surgical instruments for the Army Medical Corps. By 1980, the public's desire for sterling silver had dropped somewhat, so a housewares division was formed to broaden the product line, adding products like Reed & Barton vases, Reed & Barton salt and pepper sets, Reed & Barton photo frames, and even Reed & Barton banks. Reed & Barton was selected to manufacture the gold, silver, and bronze medals for the Olympic Games in 1996. The company remains privately owned by Henry Reed's descendants, and for more than 180 years, Reed & Barton, a company deeply steeped in American history, has been the choice of those with discriminating taste.
