About Saucony

Saucony (pronounced sock a knee), an American manufacturer of athletic shoes, is probably best-known for their award-winning premium Saucony running & track shoes. Founded in 1898 in Pennsylvania on the banks of Saucony Creek, the company did not grow very quickly until it was purchased by Hyde Athletic Industries, itself famous for casual athletic styles like PF Flyers, in the late 1960s. While the Saucony brand continued, making Saucony athletic shoes and other styles, it took another thirty years for Saucony to dominate the parent company's lines, which is when Hyde Athletic Industries changed its own name to Saucony. Around that time, Saucony developed the Grid cushioning system, still used in most Saucony walking shoes, running shoes and Saucony sneakers today. The Grip system is a webbed structure that crosses the breadth of the sole, flexing with every stride to cushion each step.

The Saucony company was purchased by Stride-Rite in 2005, which itself became a part of the low-cost footwear retailer Payless ShoeSource in 2007. On a side note, when Payless ShoeSource acquired the company, it formed the Collective Brands name, which also manages Sperry Top-Sider, Airwalk and Keds, among others. However, each brand's design and development group works independently, which is what led Saucony to its most recent breakthrough. Comfortemp reads the temperature of your skin and reacts so that you stay cooler when it's hot and warmer when it's cold. This brilliant concept is used in many Saucony linings and insoles -- it's been found particularly useful for extreme conditions, so most Saucony hiking shoes feature the Comfortemp technology - as well as the brand's apparel line, from Saucony shorts and tops to performance compression apparel.
