| Displaying a 3-speed bicycle hub on the show floor of the New York Toy Show in 1961 was the seed that eventually grew into Shimano American Corporation. During this time, the outcry for 20-inch wheeled bikes sporting hi-rise handle bars created a demand for reliable and affordable multi-speed hubs. And Shimano stepped in to fill the need grabbing the attention of the cycling industry. The need for Shimano products were in such high demand that in 1965 the youngest son of the founder, Yoshiko Shimano, opened office doors in New York to provide support and warranty assistance to all retailers that sold bikes fitted with Shimano parts. From their start with a modest three-person staff to now with a full-fledged distributing center home to sales and marketing offices, Shimano has never been distracted from their goals of always listening to the feedback and trends that make the North American cycling market and providing for their customers' needs. Shimano also developed a line of Shimano sports shoes with SPD recessed cleat and pedal technology. The unique technology, made possible with shoe and bike pedal combinations, allows for better power transference from rider to bicycle. The efficiency of the combination makes for less movement waste and even power distribution across the surface of the pedal. Shimano's efforts extend farther than their products and survive with the inclusion of advocacy programs, ISO 14001 certification and car pool programs for all employees. Moving forward, Shimano is committed to the reduction of environmental impact by their operation and production.
