| First established in 1851 as I.M. Singer & Co. by Isaac Merrit Singer and New York lawyer Edward Clark, Singer Corporation is a manufacturer of sewing machines. The company was also known by its former names as Singer Manufacturing Company (1865) and The Singer Company (1963). In 1850, Singer had redesigned and retooled the current sewing machine in order to improve its performance. Instead of using a shuttle that moved in a circular motion using a horizontal curved needle, Singer replaced it with a straight needle that moved vertically up and down. This prevented the thread from twisting with each revolution. He also replaced the hand crank with a treadle similar to that of a spinning wheel in order to generate power. Singer sewing machines have been a part of many firsts: the world's first zigzag machine, the first electronic sewing machine and today's most advanced home sewing and embroidery machine. The company has committed itself to innovation, quality, reliability and customer service throughout its more than 150 year history. The Singer Corporation has diversified to small appliances outside the realm of sewing machines as well.
