About Sony

Sony is one of the leading manufacturers of consumer and professional electronics markets. Headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, Japan, the Sony Corporation is a Japanese multinational conglomerate corporation. Sony is also involved in the Entertainment, Computer, Music and Financial market as well.

Founded by Akio Morita and Masaru Ibuka in 1946, they named their company Sony by combining the Latin word sonus for sound and the American slang word sonny meaning smart, presentable young men. The original name for the company, which was a radio repair shop after World War II, was Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation. The company built Japan's first tape recorder.

After a visit to the United States in the early 1950s, Ibuka convinced Bell Labs, which invented the transistor, to license this technology to his company in Japan. Instead of looking for military applications for this device, Ibuka developed applications for consumer communications, eventually developing the transistor radio. Sony has continued to develop recording and storage technologies, with such inventions as the Betamax videotape recording, Trinitron cathode ray tubes, computer compact discs, hi 8 and Video8 formats for cameras, Dolby Digital Sound systems, Playstation gaming devices, HD DVD and Blu-ray. Sony digital cameras, Sony personal compters, Sony video cameras, flat panel Sony televisions and semiconductors and components (batteries and memory sticks) sell throughout the world.
