| In 1897, John K. Stewart and Thomas Clark made horse trimming and sheep shearing machinery as the Chicago Flexible Shaft Company. In 1910, their company produced its first Sunbeam branded household appliance, the Princess Electric Sunbeam iron. In light of this most successful product to date, Chicago Flexible Shaft Co. officially changed its name to Sunbeam in 1946. The MixMaster Sunbeam mixer debuted in 1930, which was the first mechanical mixer with two detachable beaters with interlocking blades. By the 1970s, Sunbeam had developed into the top American manufacturer of small appliances for the kitchen and throughout the home, including Sunbeam toasters, Sunbeam hair dryers and a wide variety of other household conveniences. The company went through a difficult phase for a while, maintaining and continuing to improve its product quality in spite of declining sales due to increased competition, but Sunbeam restructured itself in 2002 as American Household, Inc. and was purchased by the Jarden Corporation two years later. Jarden was aware of Sunbeam's commitment to designing for the growing needs of every home, and Jarden's support allowed the brand to expand into new product lines. Meanwhile, the Australian branch of Sunbeam worked independently, winning awards for product designs shared with the American Sunbeam division, includingSunbeam indoor grills, the Therapeutics home health care line which offered products like Sunbeam electric blankets, Sunbeam thermometers, Sunbeam air filters and purifiers, and their newest collection of Sunbeam coffee makers and espresso machines. Sunbeam adapts and innovates, working across the globe to bring convenience and quality to customers all over the world.
