Toshiba Corporation is a Japanese multinational conglomerate corporation based in Toyko, Japan, specializing in electronic devices, semiconductors, electronic components and other consumer products, including personal computers and household appliances. Toshiba also manufactures and markets information and communications equipment and systems, Internet-based services and solutions, power systems, and industrial and social infrastructure systems.
Toshiba was the product of the merging of two companies: Tanaka Engineering Works established by Hisashige Tanaka in 1975, being Japan's first manufacturer of telegraph equipment, and Hakunetsusha established in 1890, being Japan's first producer of incandescent electric lamps. The new company's name was Tokyo Shibaura Electric, nicknamed Toshiba in 1978.
