Wilson began as Ashland Manufacturing Company in 1913 by making tennis racket strings, surgical sutures and violin strings from the animal byproducts salvaged from their parent company's meat packing plant. When the company's president was replaced by Thomas Wilson in 1915, many changes accompanied the shift in control, from the new company name, the Thomas E. Wilson Company, to the products they created, which included baseball shoes and Wilson tennis racquets. The company soon acquired a knitting mill, which allowed them to produce athletic apparel, from which the design methods for clothing and accessories like athletic socks and shorts originated. By the time Thomas Wilson left in 1918, an entire line of sports balls - including golf balls, basketballs, Wilson volleyballs and Wilson footballs - had been added, and the company name changed again, this time simply to Wilson & Co. It has been the Wilson Sporting Goods Company since 1931.
In addition to athletic equipment and gear such as Wilson bags, Wilson hats, their sports and casual apparel division includes jackets, tank dresses and casual skirts, and wallets and other accessories. Wilson is the top racquet sports company in the industry, including Wilson tennis shoes, Wilson racquetball shoes and various gear for tennis, racquetball and badminton for professionals and casual players, worldwide. They also rate number one in the industry for American football products and number two in baseball, making Wilson the true American icon in the world of sports equipment.
