About Woolrich

The Woolrich Company got its start in 1830 when John Rich and Daniel McCormick built a woolen mill in Plum Run, Pennsylvania. As the oldest woolen mill in the United States, Woolrich handles outdoor clothing and home décor from sheep to store. John Rich bought out his partner in 1845, when the company expanded beyond woolen yarns and fabrics and moved to the town that would become known as Woolrich, Pennsylvania. Offering Woolrich blankets to the army during the American Civil War helped Woolrich establish itself in households across the United States, and their bedding line, including quilts and coverlets, Woolrich comforters and duvets, and full bedding sets remain an important part of the business today.

Woolrich's move into outdoor apparel, such as Woolrich coats, in the 1920s led to outfitting Admiral Byrd's expedition to Antarctica in 1939. Throughout the decades, the company produced exclusively wool-based products, until down-filled jackets and apparel were added in 1971. The company did not add synthetic fabrics until around 1989, but wool remains an important component in most of Woolrich's products, and their return to home furnishings as a main product line in 2001 saw a resurgence of popularity in the soft, natural feel of wool. Today, Woolrich draperies and curtains, throws, and shower curtains and liners often combine the high quality inherent in wool with the durability of a partially synthetic blend, while the look and feel of outdoor life is brought into your home with rustic furnishings and soft-washed prints.
