Eucomis in the Container Garden
Bulbs of eucomis are generally available in late winter and should be planted in a soil based compost or soil mix immediately on purchase or in early spring if they can be stored in dry, frost free conditions. They look good as single specimen plants but also look wonderful in groups of three, five or seven or even more if you have a large enough container.
Choosing a Container and Compost
Many indoor containers do not have drainage holes at the base of the pot, which makes it essential that the type of compost or soil mix and the frequency of watering are carefully monitored. With most displays of winter bulbs it is advisable to use a specially formulated indoor bulb compost, which will help to maintain the balance of the soil and prevent souring.
Weather Protection For Winter Containers
On frosty nights in late autumn the leaves of both cyclamen miracle series and Silverado will go limp, but by midday, as the temperature rises, the leaves should revive and show no ill effects. Cyclamen planted in containers on an outdoor windowsill will be slightly protected by the building, but those in a hanging basket will be more exposed, and if prolonged periods of frost are forecast it may be safer to cover the plant with newspaper or move the basket to a cool, sheltered place, such as an outbuilding, garage, porch or even indoors.
