With the price of gas soaring and the cost of airfares rising through the roof, it's no wonder that more Americans are opting to stay close to home for summer vacation this year. "Staycations," or time off at home, might sound like a clever story you spin for your kids, but in reality, a few days of relaxation in your own backyard might be just the kind of stress-free time off you need.

Unlike planning for a big trip out of town, staycations don't require passports, aggravating trips to the airport or hours in the car. All you need is a few carefully selected pieces of gear to make the most of your time at home. In fact, you might never want to leave.

Fun in the Sun:
Relive your childhood by introducing your kids to a few of your favorite summer pastimes. Sandbox kits and gardening toys will provide hours of fun for your tiniest tots. Put up a volleyball or badminton net for a little friendly family competition; today's combination sets have everything you need in one bag. Old-fashioned sprinklers and a Slip-n-Slide are also fun ways to beat the heat.

Relax & Recline:
You can't call it vacation without some serious lounge time. Outfit your patio with a couple of relaxing chaises or better yet, string up a hammock in the yard. You want to look for products made out of weather resistant fabric that will stand up to the hot summer sun. Toss on a few plush outdoor pillows and you have a cozy spot for reading or that long afternoon nap.

Cooking Alfresco:
What's the most delicious part of summer? Barbecuing in the great outdoors. Anyone can turn this savory fantasy into reality by buying a few key tools for your family's backyard escape. If it's time to update your outdoor cooker, you can find great grills for less than $200, including the portable Weber Char Q and the Char-Broil 48,000 BTU gas grill that comes with a side burner. Cooking accessories, such as rib rackscedar planks and kebob skewers like these curved ones from Wrapables will make barbecuing an effortless endeavor.

Under the Stars:
You might not have time to do stargazing on a typical weeknight, but a staycation provides a prime opportunity to take in the sights right above you. While you're at it, add a little ambiance with an outdoor firepit (a copper firepit can add a bit of spark to your outdoor decor). The warmth will scare away bugs and provide a spot to make a real crowd pleaser: S'mores.
