It may be fall, but in NYC, we’re looking ahead to Spring 2010. One day into Fashion Week, and already we’re seeing a return to the classic sportswear of the seventies, served up with an edge. At Jenni Kayne, the pants, shorts, pencil skirts and cropped tops, reflected clean fluid, non-fussy lines, and her looks were simply the types of clothes you could wear again and again. But while you’ll have to wait until the weather turns frigid to get your hands on the collection, the beauty looks are yours to try right now. To complement the styles, the makeup and hair on the models exuded a casually classic girl meets downtown edge. Here’s the lowdown on nailing the looks from the top stylists backstage. Give one or two a go, and count yourself in as a trendsetting fashionista, who definitely ahead of the curve.

MAKEUP: The eyes have it once again. But shelve the dark, black smoke colors for now, and embrace deep sapphire. “Navy is a fresh feeling on the smoky eye. I toughened up the look by giving more structure and boldness at the bottom,” says Sarah Lucero, makeup artist for Stila who created the looks for Jenni Kayne. Though the real show look may be a tad too exaggerated for anyone who isn’t on a catwalk, you can translate it into every day. Lucero recommends the Stila Kajal Eye Liner in Sapphire; the creamy texture is versatile enough to be both a liner and shadow. Lightly line your upper lashline on your lid and below, then dot the color on the center of the lid and blend outward. For a night out, try Stila’s Smoky Eye Palette in The Sapphires. This ingenious palette actually talks to you, step-by-step on how to apply the look (giving brush and blending tips), so you’re guaranteed a makeup artist creation, even if you’re all thumbs with an applicator.

HAIR: Stylist to the stars Ted Gibson talked up the texture and downtown chic, and gave us his take on the tried-and-true ponytail. “Instead of wearing it high and tight, go low at the nape, twist it and let the ends curl up with an iron or round brush. It’s newer, cooler and less expected,” he says. To keep the tail in check, spritz Ted Gibson Beautiful Hold Hairspray, The gardenia-scented, lightweight formula can be layered on and won’t overpower or feel sticky like other hairsprays.

NAILS: A bold tomato red was the tint chosen by Nonie Crème, nail maven and creative director of the Butter London nail collection. “I wanted a twist on the classic American beauty, that wasn’t the traditional Coco Chanel or bluish-toned red, but one that spoke to the season and gave the models a great jolt of color. What’s different for 2010 is that fingertips and toes are the same color. In past seasons, it was always about trying to mix different shade combinations,” says Crème. What’s more, Crème was able to find the exact color from her own collection (some nail companies do exclusive colors for the shows) which means you can try her Pillar Box Red right now. “Red is a universal, classic shade that works on everyone,” says Crème.
