"More than a few Chili's heat up this restaurant business. One of the world's largest casual dining companies, Brinker International operates and franchises about 1,500 Chili's Grill & Bar locations in about 30 countries. Trailing only Applebee's as the largest full-service restaurant chain, Chili's specializes in southwestern-style dishes with a menu featuring fajitas, margarita grilled chicken, and its popular baby back ribs. About 680 of the eateries are operated by franchisees, including more than 200 international locations. In addition to its flagship chain, Brinker operates Maggiano's Little Italy, a casual Italian chain with more than 40 units, and it owns a stake in Romano's Macaroni Grill.
Brinker has become a leading force in the casual dining industry by successfully developing restaurant brands that appeal to middle America with ethnic-inspired menus and affordable prices. The company also spends heavily on marketing to promote its restaurants over rival chains, with limited-time offers and value pricing deals playing key roles in attracting new customers. Brinker's large base of corporate-run locations allows it to have more control over customer service and food quality throughout its chains.
Responding to the recession and weak consumer spending, the company has slowed the pace of its expansion in the US, opening about 40 new locations during fiscal 2009 and fewer than 15 in 2010, down from about 90 new units in 2008. Most of the new eateries added were franchised Chili's outlets. Brinker did add more than 40 new dining units outside the US in 2009 and more than 20 international locations in 2010. The company will continue to target international markets for future Chili's expansion, with plans to have more than 400 of the restaurants operating outside the US by 2014.
To help the company focus on its flagship casual-dining concept, Brinker has been disposing of its small chains. The company sold On The Border, a Tex-Mex dining concept with about 160 locations, to an affiliate of Golden Gate Capital for about $180 million in 2010. The private equity firm previously acquired an 80% stake in Romano's Macaroni Grill from Brinker for more than $130 million in 2008.
Brinker International is named for founder Norman Brinker. A pioneer of the casual-dining industry, he died in 2009 at the age of 78.
"
