If you’re looking into getting exercise equipment for your home, a treadmill is the first thing to consider. This quintessential work machine can be a big investment, but over time it makes an affordable alternative to a costly gym membership. But make sure you’re investing in the treadmill that’s best for you. Not sure what you’re looking for? Size: Treadmills take up a lot of room (most are about 7’ long and 3’ wide), so make sure to measure your workout area and look at treadmills that will fit in that space. It’s also important to try out the treadmill to make sure it’s long and wide enough for your stride (remember that running requires a longer stride and therefore a longer deck).
Safety: Most treadmills have a safety key that can be attached to your clothing which will turn off the machine if you fall.
Programs and Presets: Some treadmills come with a variety of preset exercise programs that automatically vary the speed and incline throughout your workout. Many will also allow you to create or customize your own routines as well.  
Technology: These days, treadmills have a huge variety of tech features: TV screens, USB ports, Wifi, and docks for mp3 players. Some even monitor your heart rate via hand grips or a chest strap.
Incline and Speed: Most treadmills reach speeds of up to 10mph and incline up to 10%, which should be suitable for standard workouts. If you have more intense workout needs, look for specialized treadmills with increased speed and incline ranges.
Motor power: Power is given in units of horsepower (denoting its peak power level) or continuous horsepower (the power level it can maintain for an extended period of time). Look for a continuous horsepower of at least 2 if you’ll be using it mainly for walking, 2.5 for jogging, and 3 or more for running.
Belt and Belt Deck: Thicker belts will last longer, run more quietly, and provide more cushioning, so look for belts with multiple ply. Treadmills may also have cushioning on the belt deck to reduce the impact on your joints as you exercise.
