Finding Effective Sources of Iron: Iron Supplements & Foods High in Iron

The Benefit of Iron for the Body
Iron, as we’ve established, plays a part in a variety of biochemical processes. Primarily, iron is essential to the transport of oxygen throughout the body. Most of the body’s iron is found in the blood, specifically in hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a protein in red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen from the lungs throughout the body. It’s what gives blood that dark red color. Iron is the principal component of hemoglobin, and plays a vital role in its production. Iron is required for red blood cell formation.*
Iron is also a component of myoglobin, the protein that transports oxygen to the muscles. This protein carries oxygen from hemoglobin and diffuses it throughout the muscle’s tissues.*
Additional benefits of iron may include helping to promote optimal immune health, as well as the production of hormones and neurotransmitters. Iron also supports collagen production.*
